Josie blurted all at once without drawing a breath. When she got it all out she gasped for a breath. She hadn’t been able to hold it in any longer. She felt she had probably not presented the information in the best way for him to take it in, but it was too late now.

Ross stared at her furtively, his spoon halfway to his mouth. Rose squealed in her high chair, and Josie’s nervousness grew as he continued looking at her, puzzled.

“Say something, please?”

Ross simply put his spoon down and stood. Josie heard his heavy boots shuffle to his bedroom, where he closed his door. She was left sitting at the table with Rose, looking at her father’s almost full plate.
